Candace’s Story: Gentle Teaching Beyond the Workplace
At COR, Gentle Teaching transcends the confines of a professional role; it permeates the essence of who we are in every aspect of our lives. When I first embarked on the Gentle Teaching training years ago, the notion that it “isn’t a hat you take on and off” struck me as a curious metaphor. Little did I know then, those words would become a guiding light, shaping not only the relationships within COR but extending to all aspects of my personal interactions.
Gentle Teaching, for me, is a way of life—an approach that encourages me to ask “why?” and opens the door to understanding situations from diverse perspectives. It empowers me to embrace challenging situations rather than walking away, fostering self-reflection and contributing to my personal growth.
During my pre-internship at a local school, I seamlessly integrated the knowledge, skills, and experiences gained from COR into the classroom. Teaching and learning from six individuals in the FIAP classroom, I endeavored to create a nurturing environment founded on trust and connection. The mantra “Be the person you needed when you were younger” resonates with me daily, offering an opportunity to be a positive influence in someone else’s life.
As the first Asian teacher for many students, I was moved by the heartfelt expressions of anticipation from the students on my first day. Reflecting on this, I realized the significance of representation. Representation matters—it instills a sense of belonging, fostering inclusivity. My goal is simple: to create a safe space where everyone, irrespective of their background, feels a profound sense of belonging when in my company.
In the broader context, representation extends beyond individuals—it encompasses communities. Recognizing that some groups are underrepresented or misrepresented is vital. My life’s mission is rooted in inclusivity, aiming to dismantle the barriers that make certain groups feel marginalized or superior.
Looking ahead, I eagerly anticipate incorporating Gentle Teaching into my daily life, continually striving to enhance my support and educational roles through my internship. Being a part of COR fills me with gratitude and pride, as I contribute to creating representations for those who seek them.
Warm regards,
Candace,
